I woke up this morning with the Sara Barielles song Brave running through my mind:

…But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave…

…Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave…

It made me think of all the times in my life that I didn’t express myself. Or, more likely expressed myself eloquently within the confines of my own mind, or in a journal, never actually speaking the words out loud.

Our reasons for holding back may be simple and naïve; thinking that we will have other opportunities, there is plenty of time, we will do it later. Or our reasons may be fear based: fear of upsetting the apple cart, or worse, being judged, ridiculed, or somehow punished.

But the energy of 2014 feels like it is ushering in the truth that there is much more freedom in honesty.

I am not talking about brutal opinion sharing; barely disguised toxic verbal attacks arising from repressed emotion and the ego’s need to be right. I am talking about first discerning your emotional truth and expressing it with clarity and without agenda. If we practice the Four Agreements, if we are impeccable with our word, if we don’t take anything personally, if we don’t make assumptions and we always do our best, honesty can and will set us free.

The Four Agreements may be ancient wisdom, but the frequencies that are available to us as we enter the new energetic cycle represented by 2014, can allow us to practice honesty, and the accompanying freedom it creates, in a way that is more visceral and experiential than ever before.

As we welcome 2014, together, let’s all choose to be brave, honest and free.
